It is important for plants, animals and ultimately for ourselves that you only forage what’s growing in abundance in your local area, never take more than 10%. It’s important for plants and animals and ultimately us that we forage sustainably. Not only are plants and the natural habitat crucial for the survival of animals, in some cases the plants rely on the animals eating them for seed dispersal.
It is important to learn what animals rely on the plants that we forage to have a better understanding of the importance of foraging sustainably.
Foraging brings me closer to nature, time to enjoy the woodlands, time to find peace and just be…
Something as simple as collecting spring greens to make a pesto can become an act of mental self care.
In the dark winter months there’s nothing like opening a jar of autumn flavours such as spiced damson chutney or a jar of Cherry blossom chilli jam to go with your Christmas cheese board.
The joy of opening a pot of elderberry syrup to have on our pancakes when the day’s are short and cold lifts my spirits and reminds me of all the time in nature my family and I have enjoyed and also looking forward to the year to come.
Foraging with children is hugely beneficial, not only does it get them outside in the fresh air, it gives them a connection that I believe will be a great ally later in life.
I believe all the things I prepare from the wild do a great job at supporting our family’s immune systems and keeping us healthy.
From rose syrup, concentrated turkey tail tea extracts, to elderberry ice lollies.
Foraging brings you closer to nature, a nature and habitat that’s significantly disappearing. From my own experience my passion for protecting and campaigning locally, where I can, has come from having a wider understanding about biodiversity and an interest in ancient woodland indicator species If you are trying to save a green space from development please reach out.
There’s many fantastic communities in the foraging world! If you would like to join our Surrey based Facebook community you can find it here…
